‘DOOM, are you pondering what I'm pondering? Yes, but why would the darn thing be wandering?’ MF DOOM

Born in 1891 and founded in 2024 Underhill Architects is based on the understanding that values are realized through process. Consistent communication and collaboration allows each project to align with the intentions of the client. The design and construction process can be challenging and as it turns out the creation of space can be chaotic at times. Listening, remaining curious, and advocating help provide a framework for a healthy design process.

Underhill Architects values sustainability, reciprocity, and humanity. We believe that the health of the self, individual or collective, is dependent on the health of the spaces, built or natural, inhabited. We strive to create healthy spaces that align with the intent of the project and nurture those that inhabit them. The creation of spatial caretaking. It's a lofty goal but time is short, the stakes are high, and gravity never sleeps.

Architecture eclipses craft, design, and the built environment. It resides within policy, advocacy, and equity. Understanding the constraints, opportunities, and imbalances create a framework for a successful design project. These forces are unique to each project and must be addressed early in order to proceed.

Mike Gordon

Mike has over 14 years of professional architectural experience. As a licensed architect Mike has worked on a wide array of projects including residential, commercial, urban infill, adaptive reuse, and historic preservation projects. Prior to working in architecture Mike worked at Hennepin County Medical Center in their department of Inpatient Psychiatry as a Behavioral & Mental Health Worker. Here Mike worked with vulnerable populations of people for several years. The people Mike worked with were often dealing with chronic mental health and chemical dependency issues. Witnessing this struggle and listening to people’s stories provided Mike with perspective that directs his daily work and process. Mike believes that the health of the self, individual or collective, is dependent on the health of the spaces, built or natural, that people inhabit. He strives to create healthy spaces that align with the intent of the project and nurture those that inhabit them. Understanding how individuals, organizations, and communities relate to design and the spaces they inhabit is a constant pursuit for Mike.
